Holding Hands

Into the arena the children came
kicking heart-beats over the roof
And in our silent chests
a field of wild-flowers grew.

Under moon balloons, acrobats
the children gawped like hungry chicks
An angel trailed her gossamer robe
onto finger tips.

And our leaden heads
turned somersault.

And in ragged formation they held
each other’s grins

with each other’s eyes
glanced whispers to where we sat:

why are you not holding hands?
why are you dressed in black?
